VOICES
I don’t know. Some things just seem so obvious by now. Like how wrong it is to captivate wild animals for zoos or circuses. There is no value to nature or humanity in this. And, there is certainly sadness and danger.
A whale in SeaWorld grabbed and killed a trainer recently. But Seaworld and places like it only exists because of the people willing to purchase tickets to see these animalsĀ - while they are forced to live in unnatural circumstances for our entertainment. Parents interviewed in this article admitted that although they had conflicted feelings being brought to zoos when they were young, they found themselves doing the same thing with their own children years later, “following in their footsteps without thinking”, as one parent put it.
Why are we so unwilling to listen to our own wisdom voices, our intuition - both as individuals and culturally? I spoke of this with my yoga group just yesterday. First of all, it’s hard to hear it when we are awash in distraction. So we try to get quiet, but then how do we recognize our inner voices? Well, it’s simple. Our inner voice is the voice that contains no justifications or reasoning - no obvious agenda. Our inner voice does not rationalize, or even say “because”. Instead, it is the voice that simply, “knows”.
Being simple doesn’t mean it’s easy. Even if you hear it, ego and emotions often block out the message. There are other times that blocks in energy muffles it, or responsibilities covers it up, or cultural influences veils the clarity.
But it’s there. You can be certain of that much. Sometimes it is about something as mundane as what you are going to wear that day. But sometimes, it’s a matter of life…and death.
Listen.
